Untours Cafe

Today was another big day for us--we decided to go to the Paris flea market at Clignancourt.  There is a famous gypsy jazz (manouche) guitar school there along with a restaurant called Les Chopes des Puces.  So, mustering up our maps money, and good walking shoes, we took off.  It was a gorgeous day, and this part of Paris was a revelation.  Sooo many poor refugees here, so much poverty, so little beauty...

The flea market was vast and a little overwhelming--you'd need days to take it all in.  But what fun, we saw everything from art to trash, and everything in between.  We even found the jazz school with no problem.  I had read that they offered Saturday afternoon concerts in the restaurant, and we had decided that was a great idea, as we didn't really want to be in the area at night, not knowing anything about the buses and metros etc.  So we went in, found a table where we were welcomed cordially and listened to some of the best jazz we've ever heard!  We decided to stay and eat, so had, to start, a trio of terrines with toasts, we split beef bourguignon, a good red wine, and baked mashed potatoes.  Cheese for dessert.  Man was it ever fun!  We stayed for hours!  After tearing ourselves away from flea marketing and music, we headed to the downtown Opera area, where we visited Galleries Lafayette food store for vac packed cheese to take home, and also found another guitar shop called RF Charle in Galerie Vero-Dodat, one of the original covered galleries in Paris.  How beautiful it was!  And Christian Laboutin shoe store was in one end!  Wow, shoes and guitars, how could we get so lucky!

Both were closing by this time, so we vowed to return before we left, as Rhea did get a chance to check out a few of the guitars and wanted to see more.  I would never buy a pair of Laboutins, but they sure are pretty to look at!

Dinner was at home tonight, salad and a sandwich, along with a tart from the patisserie on the corner...
