Today we had thunderstorms early so we stayed in for a bit and had a good breakfast. Then we decided we would go to the Protestant cemetery in Rome, and the pyramid, as well as Eatily, the food store started by an Italian group along with Mario Batali and Lidia Bastenevich. We love to cook and investigate markets, so it seemed like a good combination. We caught the bus with no effort, and made it to the cemetery in very little time...what a beautiful, peaceful place it was. \its the resting place of Keats and Shelley, and other prominent and not so prominent people. It has marvelous statuary, and a cat sanctuary too. Famous all over for that. The pyramid of Caius Cestius, built in the first century BC was unfortunately covered with scaffolding for repair, but was still pretty good to see...then onto Eatily. It has been described as the IKEA of food, and that is pretty apt. It is more fun to go to the small markets, but was still a fun place to investigate and we did buy a few things...
We returned home to get a couple of pizzas from that little place next door. These had prosciutto on one, and blue cheese and artichokes on the other. Both were to die for!!
After a decent interval, we gott gussied up a little and went to the Spanish Steps for some shopping around. I bought a pretty bracelet and a pendant for my sister in law, as well as some little trinkets for nieces at home. At around 8 or so, we went to Gregory's, a jazz bar at Via Gregoriana 54. I had read about this place on TripAdvisor, and it proved to be a great review!! We had pecorino and pears, drizzled with honey and walnuts, then pasta with an artichoke cream sauce, all divine. Then we went upstairs at 10 or so for a great concert by Emmanuele Urso, the king of swing. What a fab group!! They were smoking hot, a group with clarinet, vibes, piano, bass, guitar, drums, they were absolutely fantastic. I dont know as i have ever heard anyone play clarinet like that!!
Afterward, we walked home, somewhat lost but then found, and made it into our apartment by 2 AM!! Had to have the hotel doorman let us in....we felt like kids again.
