Put this on your must see list if going to the Salzburg, Austria area.

We went on our first Untour September 3-26. What a wonderful time we had. We visited the Rhine area for the first week, the Bavarian castle the second week and then went to the Salzburg area in Austria. We finished up the trip with two days in Munich for Oktoberfest. Like I said, we had a great time and each week had it's special memories and all are great choices for an Untour. I won't go into the details or try to convince anyone that they should do what we did. I will say as a first time Untourist that Untours is without a doubt the most hassle free, people oriented and friendly group of folks to handle your future travel plans. Once an Untouist always an Untourist.!

Now, on to the most awesome and memorable day trip. We stayed iin Pfarrwerfen, Austria and had a rental car which I would recommend. This is an easy drive from any of the Untour villages around Salzburg. The place that impressed me and tops my list of things to see is the Liechtensteinklamm ravine near St. Johann, Austria. St. Jojann is located about 55link km south of Salzburg using Tauernautobahn A-10. This is a self guided tour and cost around 6 euro per person. For a little background information, this is a breathtaking display of the natural forces of water as it carves it's way through the earths-crust. Nothing stands in the way of the power of water and it's ability to change the landscape. This is near the entrance of the ravine. . As you continue following the path you begin to see the result of the power of water and it's forces.

Notice the wood walkways as they are most impressive as you continue upstream into the ravine. The funding for these walkways and paths was donated by the Prince of Liechtenstein as he was duly impressed upon viewing this natural wonder in 1875.

As you continue deeper into the ravine this miracle of nature takes on it's own sense of adventure, special event and romantic atmosphere.

To put it lightly you become consumed by the roar of the waterfalls, the torrential, crystal clear waters and the towering canyon walls, 900 feet high in some places, so narrow that you can only see a small strip of sky above you.

Oh the beauty of it all!

Are you beginning to get the sense of adventure?

This is a shot of tree growing out of the wall. The sunshine really looked like the trees had a spotlight on them.

amazing as the water converges into such a smallspace.

This is the 60 ft. waterfall that is at the top of the ravine. There is a nice sitting area across from the waterfall so that you can sit, enjoy the waterfall and enjoy the slight breeze and mist from the waterfalls.

There are two nice Gasthauses at the enterance of the ravine. After you are done with your tour you can get nice meal and some good cold beer. The prices are very reasonable. Here is a link that has some nice pictures and history of the Liechtensteinklamm. Liechtensteinklammer
I hope that you enjoy this blog and can make this one of your sites to see while in the Salzburg area.

Nice photos and a great write up about this magnificent wonder of nature. Can you do hiking in the area? How long would the hike last?

Kim,

I have updated the blog with the Mileage from Salzburg, time of self guided tour and cost. This is a fairly easy kick but does have some fairly steep stairway to climb in one place. Also there might be a concern for folks that have claustrophobia issues. My sister only made it about half of the way because of this. She was get that feeling of closeness due to the walls and then there are three or four small tunnels that you must go through. Do I need to add this? thanks.

We were at the gorge in July and it is tbeautiful. Thanks for posting this blog with the great pictures. It brings back good memories. We stayed in Werfen at the Burgmueler Apartments and drove to the gorge. Sometime during the day, my friend lost her watch. It was a nice gold watch and a gift from her husband. She was saddened by the loss, of course, and when Michaela Burgmueller came by the apartment that afternoon, told her about it. We know not to bring valuable things on our trips but sometimes we do it anyway. Believe it or not, Michaela called the gift shop at the gorge the next day and my friend's watch had been found and turned in. Those of you that have been to the gorge know how rough the terrain is and how large an area it is. It is amazing that the watch didn't fall into the water. That precious Michaela drove to the gorge and picked it up and surprised my friend with it that night. When we drove away from Werfen, we all felt like we were leaving family when we drove off with Michaela waving goodby to us.

I am glad that you were able to enjoy the pictures. Thank so much for sharing such a wonerful story about the watch. Things like this are good to hear and know that the world still has honest folks. It sounds to me like Michaela should get an Untours award for going the extra mile. Great story with a good ending.
