I just happened to notice that today is the birthday of Rostand's character, apparently based on an historical person, who came from Bergerac. As Bergerac in the Dordogne...where we're going...soon. Coincidence?-- or --cue theme from the X-files!
Okay, seriously, we have been studying like crazy and find that the areas of interest chronographically are;
Pre-history- the geology, the caves, the troglodyte dwellings
Romans-ruins, bridges, roads, hoping for a relatively close aqueduct, beginnings of wine, truffles
Medieval-monasteries above & below ground, cloisters, churches,
Hundred Years War-bastides, castles, English occupation, Bordeaux wines
Renaissance- fancier churches, more wine
Enlightenment-Montesquieu, Montaigne, Boetius, did I mention wine?
And of course, always, music, art & architecture.
This almost sounds too ambitious, since we are supposed to be relaxing, but I hope we'll be able to fit it all in in a coherent enough fashion that we can savour & remember it.
