Untours Cafe

All over the world Bloggers are Blogging and Twitterers are Tweeting so I thought we should try our hand at joining the noise. At least this is a site where we can talk about one of our favorite subjects and leave notes about a trip we are on or some trip in our past.

We are now only 12 days from getting on United flight 936 non-stop from Washington Dulles to Zurich to start our four week stay at Chalet Berit in Sachseln. It will be the usual warm and happy feeling when we step off the train and see Albert Greutert waiting to greet us. But we are also likely to get teary eyed because our beloved Berit will not be with him. This will be the fifth time to stay with them and we have never managed to imagine staying anywhere else, although everyone we meet tells us about their wonderful landlords. So it is obvious that every Untourist has their favorite comfortable Home Town. Ours just happens to be Sachseln.

Our minds have been full of returning to our favorite places on day trips, but perhaps our real favorite activity is sitting on the porch at Chalet Berit looking out over Sachseln and having relaxing chats with Albert (now sadly without Berit), daughter Elisabeth, and Vance (a fellow UT alumnus).

Enough for this first attempt. I will stop with a few pictures from Chalet Berit.

Bill and Marge; We feel like we know you, as you often follow us at Chalet Berit. This is our 10th visit, so it feels very much like home.

We just returned from Berit's funeral. It was a beautiful service, with wonderful music selections--grand daughters Simone, Michelle, and Gaby speaking Michelle playing her flute. The minister knew her well, so his words were heartfelt.

It was a warm, sunny day for family and friends to say goodbye.

It will be nice for Albert to have such good friends coming.

Congrats on your first blog. Joan.

Joan and Bruce, thanks for your comment. Do you know enough of the language to have understood the service? Would have been interesting. We, like everyone, will miss her greatly.

I hope you have better weather these next two weeks than we did the same period last year. It rained 12 of the 14 days. But we still loved being there.

Who is the Bear sitting next to you? Is he a Cal Bear? The best kind.

I do not speak German, but can get the drift of conversation and news articles. I can ask questions and greet people. Always read 20 Minuten--easy, short paragraphs. Never ask for an English menu. German describes the food preparation much better. Reading cooking instructions is always fun. Between German, French, and Italian we always eat well.

This may be a Cal Bear but if he is, he is on a Heartland Untour too. Actually he is a woodcarving. The picture was taken in the hallway between Jobin's and the woodworking shop in Brienz.

We lived in Sunnyvale from 1965 till 1981 when the company was bought out and we had to move. Marge's brother came out from our hometown of Knoxville, TN in 1971 and has has lived in Sonoma for 35 years now. We visit almost every year. So we know and love Northern CA. We have lived in Northern Virginia for 10 years now.

We must arrange to meet on your next visit to Sonoma. We live in San Rafael, right on the way. Think we can send a message from our profile--will give it a try.
