I found an excellent video on TripAdvisor that gives tips on using the Paris Metro. It goes into detail and gives visual examples that I find very useful :

oh, that was well done! another find from Bill.

One thing she doesn't say, which is GOOD to know is that you can depend on being stopped on a fairly frequent basis by controllers, who need to see your ticket. This is because some folks jump the turnstile, so they have to enforce penalties to discourage scofflaws.

When my family lived in Paris, and were frequently on the Metro 3 -6 times a day sometimes!) we were asked for our ticket about every week or ten days. The teams of controllers are rather stern and not altogether forgiving. Many newcomers to Paris don't know that they have to KEEP their ticket for the whole length of their journey (also for those exits she mentions where one must insert the ticket to get out.) and they have paid and done everything properly, but having nothing to show for the controllers, as they have tossed the ticket.

This results in a 50 euro fine ---OUCH!! We learned this the hard way.
