A very American homage to Paris....

I love the video of this dad and his obvious affection for Paris, life, his wife and his daughter.....and it captures the elation that you feel, when the weather is right and you are flowing with the magic of that amazing amazing… Continue

Baron von Crailsheim & his new car

Baron von Crailsheim sent us this picture a few days ago -- he, his daughter-in-law, and twin granddaughters are pictured in his new antique car! See it for yourself when you go to Schloss Sommersdorf in Bavaria,… Continue

Speaking of the Netherlands, and all things spring-like

I was doing a BIG gardening weekend....this the first really nice weather weekend we have had, that I could get to the garden, and noting with mild sadness that the tulips I bought at the Keukenhof in HOlland in 1996 are somewhat decimated. Those that the deer haven't eaten seem to have lost some of their glory over the years.

I remember the tulips being literally the size of a cantelope in diameter the first few years. The variety and quality of the tulips at Keukenhof in Holland (the… Continue

Idyllchat Recap: Suggestions for Tuscany

Here's a tidbit from a conversation going on on our email discussions list for past, present, and future Untourists. One person planning a trip for May (just a few short days away!) asked for recommendations, and the number of responses is amazing! There have been several great suggestions, so look in the archives. I've copied one below to whet your appetite.

Italian Immersion

Here's a short tidbit from our staff person Andrea who was in Italy on an work assignment this April:
13 April 2007

I don't speak Italian, but I am learning. And when working over here it is often hard for me to find time in the evenings to study. So I pick up expressions on the way. Some of my favorite ones from this trip so far are

  • "Che peccato" - What a shame!
Learned at the butcher on one of the farms where we rent…

Welcome to Untours

At Untours, we believe (and have found) that the best way to

travel is independently. Maybe it's the rugged individualist in each

of us (Untours founder Hal started out as a rancher), but the thought

of being herded from landmark to restaurant to hotel just makes us

crazy! Of course, escaping that organized-tour safety and security

makes an Untour a little bit like a Choose-Your-Own Adventure novel,

but we think it's worth it. After all, you see the… Continue

Rome Part Two (thumb and forefinger)

Saturday, July 1st

.....and the line goes on and on...

My morning routine: get up a few hours before the others for some nice alone time. Wash clothes in sink, hang on line from kitchen window. Look across the courtyard to see if the old lady is in her window looking at me. Look down to see if the furniture restorer is unloading/loading his car. Look up at the swallows dipping and diving, squealing high above. Just before… Continue

Rome- Part One

Rome: June 27th to July 5th, 2006

Our flight was on Air France. We were to connect in Paris and then fly into Rome, arriving @ 1 pm the next day. Boarding was a half-hour late. Okay, not so bad. But then we sat on the tarmac, 30th in line waiting for take-off! So we cooled our jets for another 2 hours. Lots of consternation among the travellers. Seems like most of us were on a connecting flight itinerary. Each of us took turns throughout the flight announcing,… Continue

Florence, 2009

UNTOURS – Florence

September 23

Upon arrival at the Florence train station we were met by Mary Jane Poole and Marco, our driver. Mary Jane rode with us to our apartment, took us in and waited while Gabriella, the apartment representative, showed us around. After Gabriella left, we realized there was no phone in the apartment, an important item for us. We decided to use the Untours cell phone and a phone card from a Tobacco shop easily located everywhere in Italy by a large “ T”… Continue
