Berit and Albert Greutert

After a week in Bachrach we came to Switzerland where the Greuterts took us in when we needed friends! Bob had a major dental problem and Albert took over. Then Berit took us into their family for a wonderful supper and evening and put us up in the Elizabeth apartment.
Actually we first knew Berit at one of the Idyll parties in Sachseln. She was the party lady par excellence! She will always be there for us.

A Newbie

I just found the website and thought it would be something I would enjoy. I love to travel and not only share my experiences but to hear from others how they enjoyed there's. So far we only traveled by tour or by cruising. Being able to stay in one place and enjoy the area as the locals do is a dream of mine. Please let me know how you heard about this type of travel and what your experiences has been like.

New sketches on my Café page

In the months since our 2008 Untours in Leiden, Holland and the tiny Alsatian village of Beblenheim, I have been sketching along the California central coast near our home in Morro Bay. Just up the coast highway is Cambria, where I go out with the "Wednesday Irregulars," a great group of artists who paint in the "plein air" tradition. This is a fancy way of saying that we paint outdoors, beginning and completing our work in a couple of hours -- then gathering for the world's least threatening… Continue

Berit

Our first Untour, as well as our first time to Ch was spent in Studio Albert. The Gruetert's made us feel so welcome and such a part of the family that after a couple of days we felt like we were visiting old friends. Albert shared with us that the night before we arrived he dreamed that he went to pick up the guests and that Princess Di stepped off the train. I told him that I was Princess Di without make-up. So for the rest of the trip I was known as Di.

Berit arranged for my… Continue

A Light Has Gone Out In CH

Berit Greutert died this morning about 0430 local time in the Kanton Hospital in Sarnen. She came from Norway, and always loved her homeland as well as CH. She and Albert had been married 52 years and had lived in CH 40 of those years. They had three wonderful children, Jan Erik, Heidi, and Elisabeth. These three gave Berit a host of grandkids, and great grandkids. They in turn gave her love beyond the norm and were with her when The Circle… Continue

Andalucia and Barcelona Blog

We have just returned from the 2 week Andalucia Untour followed by 1 week in Barcelona (April 22-May 13, 2009). Here are some observations and hints.

We stayed in the Posada Real apartment in Priego de Cordoba.

Initially, it was too chilly to truly enjoy all that Priego had to offer. Near the end of our second week, however, the sun came out, it warmed up, and we could truly enjoy the restaurants, cafes, and strolls through our "hometown". For us, an apartment in… Continue

"If you can't make it to France, head for Quebec"

There is an interesting article in the Travel section of today's Sunday Star Ledger. It's about the "Other France", Quebec.

Bill & Ann Logan, Fall 2008

Bill and I were in Leiden, Holland from 8/27 until 9/10 of 2008. We took a cab to the apartment, which is compact, but in an attractive area of Leiden near the University. We walked to the bakery, supermarket and Kieck (rhymes with peek) in the Pot, a really neat "take-out" which we used often! The Greek salad and beef stew were delicious, as were all their selections. We took a long walk to the huge outdoor market, walked home, had a glass of wine, supper and bed.

Swiss Mountain Pass Conditions

You can monitor the conditions on the passes here:

http://www.swissinfo.ch/ger/infos_zur_schweiz/verkehrsinfo/index.html?siteSect=490

Most in The Heartland remain closed for now. The Gotthard (about 27 May) is a priority, and they have about 200,000 TONS of snow to move there. Next come the Oberalp (about 14 May) and the Klausen (about 5 June). Then they will work on the Furka (5 June), Susten (19 June), and Grimsel.

Venice April 8 - 22, 2009

We recently returned from two fantastic weeks on an Untour to one of the world's most amazing cities, Venice.

Arriving at 2:00 PM, we were met at the airport by Denny, a delightful person. As we walked to the water taxi, I asked Denny when the other Untourists would be arriving. She told us that we were the only ones this term. Needless to say we were very disappointed as we very much enjoy meeting our fellow travelers.

Oberland- Easy trips and hikes

Oberland- Easy trips and hikes.

My wife and I spent three weeks in Switzerland in 2008, and I have some very definite recommendations for must see trips and hikes that would be good for almost anyone staying in the Lake Thun area. Besides riding the boat around Lake Thun and visiting Thun itself, make sure you visit the following:

The Niederhorn on Lake Thun

Lauterbrunnen Valley

Hike from Murren to Winteregg, or all the way to Grutschalp

Hike from Kleine Scheidegg to… Continue

Out of the dark ages of dial up

I finally did it. I bought a mini laptop for travel and had to get high speed wireless to access the internet even at home. Wow! How did I live without this.
I'm currently planning three trips, Hilo, Hawaii in December, Rome in March for a quick meet up with friends and then back to Venice with Untours in October 2010.
I'll be updating here as the Italian plans progress.
