I saw your picture, very very nice. Always feel blessed to witness something like that. Do you know Tom Davis, in past "life/lives" he lived in Oriental sailing a large wooden boat/ship and running a B&B. Think he and wife might not be toghether anymore. He was my boss many many moons ago, he is about 6'7" so is hard to miss, used to blue water charter/captain the boat if I have the story right. At any rate, our picture is at the mouth of the Narragansett Bay on the East side of Jamestown Island. Our daughter lives in Providence, in-laws are thru out southern RI, Newport, Jamestown and Narragansett. This schoomer was passing by and made a nice shot.

Rose -

We were there at the end of October. There were times we needed to bundle up, but often the days were very pleasant.

We had seven in our group and stayed at Poggio alla Rose in Buonconvento - apartments 1 and 3.

See my blog for all the details.

Hi Rose. I didn't attempt to learn any amount of Italian, but knowing how to say "please" and "thank-you" helps. Amazingly, sign language works wonders as long as it's done with a smile. Actually, many of the Italians in the service industry know some English. We found the most important Italian to know was "due cappucino".

Hi Rose,
I would visit Rome first, then relax in Tuscany. We had an Untours provided driver to pick us up at the airport and take us into Rome to our apartment. I would not ever attempt to drive in Rome. I have driven back to the airport from Umbria using the "ring" road around the city. That was doable. In the city, never. I love Rome. Have a wonderful trip. Do learn some Italian, it makes it so much more fun. I used Pimsleur's language cds and BBC language website.

You will absolutely love Tuscany. Which apartment have you reserved?
Last September I stayed at Anna Lodovico's. which is just about a mile
from Buonconvento, and watched them bring in the grapes and crush them
just outside the apartment - quite a thrill. I normally stay at Poggio Rose
1 in Buonconvento, and will be back there again in May. It's a nice little
FLAT town, which is hard to find over there! Just wait till you see the drive
to and fron Montalcino! More later. Yes, I would love to be your friend.

There will be plenty of food in your apartment when you get there, courtesy
of the owners, and they don't need to be replaced. The next morning will be
orientation, followed by lunch hosted by Untours, and after that, if you need
something you can go to the COOP and shop. I'd recommend the one in
Buonconvento as it is quite new and large, with lots of parking. The one in
Montalcino is small and most folks shop at Buonconvento. Be sure you have
a 1 euro coin to put in the slot of the cart - they're all in a row outside the
COOP - and then when you are through shopping and put your groceries in
your car just return the cart and your coin will pop back out for you to take.
Be sure and get some ruby red orange juice - it's to die for. Liquor is very
cheap there but be sure to get one of those BIG jugs of red wine, for about
8 euros. It's the same as the house wine at restaurants, and much better
than the expensive stuff. Also, check with your landlady to see if youi can
drink the water in your apartment. If so, fill your water bottles with that and
don't order bottled water when you eat out - it will cost more than a bottle
of wine!

Rose: I've been to the Swiss Heartland and Paris, but not to Bavaria. So I can't help you with information on Bavaria.

Rose, Our Untour to the Castle in Bavaria was in 2002. We loved it. Though it has been a while, I doubt it has changed much, and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Yes, the photo was taken on a sailboat, but not ours-we are not sailors.. We were passengers on a large Cat in Hilton Head.
