Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Where would you most like to go next?
We want to go to Spain and Tuscany.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
In 2006, we stayed at the Gamet apartment in Provence. The couple was wonderful and Cathy, in particular, was absolutely delightful. She didn't speak much English and we spoke no French and it was so fun to make ourselves understood. She just continued to laugh and giggle which was, of course, contagious.

Greece (Sept. 2007) was made even more special by the Untours-on- site-staff, Christos. His enthusiasm for his country and hometown of Nafplio is catching. He is very special and anyone going to Greece with Untours will be charmed by him.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
We are drawn to the historical sights in particular. We never had a lot of exposure to art and so the more we travel and visit art museums, the more knowledge and appreciation we have gained for it. My husband is especially found of good food and restaurants, so we seldom cook. We are both big on researching what we will be seeing. I am the photograper, mostly, and like to make albums complete with lengthy descriptions of what one is seeing. I figure no one will ever read them, but maybe when I'm old and no longer able to travel, they will refresh my memories.
When you upload photos to Untours Cafe, you are also giving Untours permission to use the photos in their promotional material (with credit to you)
Which Untours have you already done?
Our first Untour,2005, was a sampler of one week in Rome and one in Venice. In 2006 we went to Provence and added on one week in Paris. In 2007 we enjoyed Greece. Two weeks with Untours on the Peloponnese with a couple overnight trips and then we added 4 nights in Athens and 3 nights on Santorini. In 2008 we visited Holland.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Do some pre-planning. We have found Rick Steves books to be very helpful. Then let the Untour staff take over. Enjoy doing things at your own pace.
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Austria - August 2013 - Part 8 - Another adventure comes to an end

August 28 - Wednesday

This morning we reassessed our plans for the rest of the vacation. When we studied the train schedules we found that it was going to take two (maybe three, I can't remember) train changes to get to Rothenburg and one of those changes was only 10 minutes long. Then leaving Rothenburg it was going to be multiple changes again to get to the Frankfort airport. We had several people tell us how nice Rothenburg was and we were looking…

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Austria - August 2013 - Part 7

August 25 - Sunday

By the way, I believe I mentioned that we do not like duvets.  They get too hot and heavy for us.  So the first two nights in Salzburg, I removed the duvet from its cover and just used the cover as a sheet.  For two days the maid put the duvet back into the cover and I took it out in the evening.  Finally, the last night she figured it out and left me an extra cover, but still put the duvet back into another cover.  It worked for…

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Austria - August 2013 - Part 6

August 22 - Thursday

After breakfast we packed up and headed east. We will definitely have fond memories of the family and Hotel Maximillian in Ehbenichl, Austria.  The first part of the drive took us back along the same road we had traveled yesterday, past Lake Plansee, until finally we were in new territory.

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Austria - August 2013 - Part 5

August 18 - Sunday

This morning we have docked at Basel, Switzerland and we must be out of our room by 9:00 AM with our bags in the hall. Dick and I were amazed at how efficient the checking out process went. We had settled our bill yesterday afternoon, so all we had to do was pack our last minute items, put our bags out, go to one last delicious breakfast buffet, and wait in the lounge area visiting with fellow passengers. Most of the 133 people…

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Austria - August 2013 - Part 4

August 16 - Friday

This morning's tour began with ride through the canals of Strasbourg in a glass top small boat.  The buildings were very pretty.  Unfortunately, pictures I took through the glass are good reminders for me, but not good enough to share.  Obviously, you get the glare of the glass. We then began a walk through the town with our local guide who pointed out various things.  Ultimately we ended up at the Strasbourg Cathedral. The…

Thanks for the joining the Cafe. We would like to hear (or see) anything you want to share about -- it helps if it is remotely travel-related.

Let us know if we can help. And let us know a little bit about yourself and your Untour-ish interests, when you have a chance.

Don't hesitate to ask me (marilee)or powen or Kim (my colleagues and partners onthe Cafe project for help, if you need it.

I just posted (pending approval) photos of the Etoile Park Hotel in Paris 1973 and 2008. I had Eleanor stand in the exact same spot she did in 1973. In my blog archives under "The Last Time I Saw Paris...Revisited" are more photos and comments about our visit with the lady inside at the front desk.

Linda, thanks for asking me to be your friend! I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about Spain. We like to focus on one area so we were only in Andalusia but any questions you have about Southern Spain - fire away and I'll see if I can help!

I have been to Spain 3 different times - but have never been to the northern part... except Barcelona. If I could answer any other questions about other areas I will. I have friends from Madrid and also barcelona so if I can't help I can ask for their advice!

Hi Linda! I see that you recommend Rick Steves' books. We have also found many of his suggestions to be good ones, but would love more of your thoughts on books to read before and perhaps even during traveling. Come join our discussion on the new Book Forum!

There are Journals and guidebooks in your apartment with recent restaurant information. Lots of choices but rijstafel is a must. We used the Leiden museum for free internet (with museum card). Street market is great. Buy flowers there. We liked Kroller-Muller and Zuiderzeemuseum.
