Profile Information

What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Sachseln, Switzerland; Austria, Vienna; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Paris, France
Where would you most like to go next?
Paris, France; re-visit Sachseln, Switzerland so we may visit with dear friends; and some day visit Lithuania.
Tell us about one of your favorite places to stay on an Untour. Do you have a favorite host? Apartment? Village?
Chalet Berit in Sachseln, Switzerland. Berit and Albert are like family.
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
Keeping a daily travel journal, reading for pleasure, meeting new people, and seeing new things or places about which you've read or heard.
When you upload photos to Untours Cafe, you are also giving Untours permission to use the photos in their promotional material (with credit to you)
While strolling in Zurich on our first Untour, we came upon two Polizei (police officers) walking in the opposite direction. I approached them and struggled to find the correct German words to ask to take their photograph. One of the Polizei then said, in perfect English, "Would you like me to speak English?"
Which Untours have you already done?
Swiss Heartland for two weeks in 2002 and for a month in 2004
Recently, a month in Paris, France (2008)
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
"Try it, you'll like it!" If you enjoy the freedom of touring sights of your choice, and staying as long you desire, Untour Traveling is for you. If you feel like rolling-over to catch a few extra z-z-z-z-z-s, it's something you can do. Spend time with a local, and perhaps form a friendship for life. We did that, and you can, too.
What is your favorite Untour? (so far)
Swiss Heartland

Swimming helps one's body, and enables you to meet others to boot.

Since Post-Polio Syndrome alerts one to the feelings of fatigue, weakness and pain, it was important to learn which activities will help maintain your present strength. Swimming was the answer for me. After I was forced towards early retirement, I scoured a local newspaper to learn what communities offered. S.W.I.M., Inc. immediately caught my attention. Not only were Volunteers available to assist in the pool and in the locker rooms, but the cost was FREE. I contacted the Coordinator for a local S.W.I.M., Inc. Chapter to learn the day and times they met, and signed-on. That was twelve years ago. Thanks to this outstanding organization, I’ve been able to ward off some additional weaknesses. There are eight chapters in the state of New Jersey. It would be great if more states offered something equivalent. If anyone is interested in learning about this organization, S.W.I.M., Inc. does have a web page. In order to express some of my appreciation, I have volunteered to be a Coordinator for one of their chapters. My husband is a Volunteer, too. Both of us have gained much through S.W.I.M., Inc.

Untour Trips We've Taken

Thus far, my husband and I have been able to enjoy thoroughly three Untour trips. Two were to Switzerland; first one for a two week period, and the second trip for a month. Most recently (April & May, 2008), we spent a month in Paris, France. Like Switzerland, we would love to return.…

Your Computer and WiFi

When I had spoken to our Parisian contact, Larry, he had warned me about using my laptop with WiFi.

He said that I would be vulnerable to other computer users within 300-feet. They could easily capture, for

example, my bank account information whenever I made an attempt to pay a bill online.

Today, one of my Tech News newsletters discussed this very topic. Rather than indicate the web

address, and leave it up to our Untour Café members to read the information, I've… Continue

Very Clever Advertisement by the Dutch

One of our S.W.I.M., Inc. Members had forwarded a Link

to an online Dutch Advertisement. The web page is in

Dutch, and you won't be able to place an order. However,

you will enjoy the ingenuity and humor of the message,

I'm positive.

Side Note: The Link had been forwarded to Francy.

She happens to be in Holland at the moment. Here's

GreenPrint World -- Save on Paper

Through a Nevada ink cartridge business from which I

purchase "Remanufactured" ink cartridges at a lower

cost than "brick stores" and many "online stores,"

came this bit of news from the owner, Phil.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First a Couple of Side Comments:
My niece, Kristina said that she has been using this GreenPrint
printer at work for a year. Her comments were:
"It's actually pretty good. The program… Continue
Will you be prepared if a FIRE hits?
Earlier, a description was depicted of an early morning awakening by a Fire Alarm sounding in our motel room. My husband was finishing up with his shower, and I still was dozing. Since I'm disabled, we try to obtain a ground level room. It's not always possible, but in this case we were pleased that we were. When I decided to check on the extend of the fire, my nearby crutches were grabbed and I headed towards the room's entrance way. My plan was to see if smoke was coming in underneath the…
Don't you ever sleep? You are constantly on the go, and even now answering a comment made only moments ago.
Placing a photo in front of the comment box helps to bring the two people closer as they chat back and forth. Nice touch.
thanks for your note - we loved Paris for two weeks and never grew tired or it or a lack of things to do. I will add our trip-log to this site when I figure out that part of the site and also add lots of photographs. One thing to mark down now is to visit Giverny and Monet's Gardena and Workshop, plus there is a wonderful little gallery that show the full vision of Monet - some from is very troubled period that you normally would never see!!.
Good to learn that our plans to visit Giverny and Monet's Gardens will be worth the time.
We had realized that there was a lot to see in Paris, and two weeks will provide a "dent" in the sightseeing, so after Tuscany, some more trips in USA, we might be back to Paris. One word we use a great deal in this household is "Eventually." When I have the time, I'll have to check out your triplog of Paris. Were photos included there?
HI, El & Bill. I talked to Powen and I'm getting in better shape. Yes, Doris and I are going to Chalet Berit July 18-Aug. 1. At our ages, this may well be our last overseas venture. We have another couple going with us. We will think of your there. Bob
El, I looke up the Blind Cos on the Internet and was hsocked to see a comment that a diner there might run $70 per person. Did you and Bill go for lunch, and if so, do you remember the approximate cost? We were thinking of going for lunch.
Bob, We thoroughly had enjoyed the luncheon experience at the Blindekuh (Blind Cow) Restaurant located in Zurich. Francy Douglas-Breon (Swiss Staff) had provided the heads-up about this unique restaurant whereby all servers were blind, and wore bells on their feet as to avoid "crashing into one another," especially while carrying their trays with food. The diners ate in total darkness which provided an inkling as to what a blind individual undertook while eating. We ate at the Blindekuh in 2002, and with the popularity of the restaurant rising as well as market prices, undoubtedly the cost would have increased by now, 2007. We have a photo of the board menu with prices indicated at that time. In 2002 the entrées, per person, ranged between 23.50 to 39.50 Swiss Francs. Desserts ran between 9.50 to 12.50 CHF.
El
P.S. At that time (2002) we figured 80% of the CHF gave you the US equivalent. Now (2007), you figure about 90%.
