What is your favorite place in Europe so far?
Tuscany [going back for 3rd time this April] and Venice
Do you have any special interests or hobbies that you follow when you travel?
I love hot air ballooning. Our best experience was in Tuscany, flying out of a low valley just above ther tree tops and over the Sienese crete. We landed in a field of sunflowers. Then we sipped Antinori prosecco. Who knew Antinori made processo? It was lovely with cold pizza on a cool morning.
What advice would you give others considering an Untour?
Give up the to-do list and enjoy the moment. Talk to the shop keepers. Get a new recipe. Peek into the gardens.

Back from Roma

Our trip to Roma with Untours last year was so successful that we returned on our own this year. That's both good news and bad news for Untours, I guess. Bur mostly I think it's a testament to how well Untours prepares us to experience and navigate these wonderful places.

We found our apartment over the Web and think it would make a great Untours apartment. It is just 4 blocks from the Piramide and the station. Very convenient for Metro, bus and Ostia train. You have to imagine going… Continue

Do you want to hot air balloon?

We want to go hot air ballooning during our Tuscany South visit April 9-23. We have two tentative reservations, one to fly out of Montisi [30 min from Montalcino, over the crete siennese] or from a little farther north that will take us over Siena. Price for Montisi is 200 euros; if we can find another 1-3 people, the Siena trip is reduced to 220 euros. Is any one interested?

This picture is taken in 2001 leaving from Montisi. The… Continue

We just got our final documents for our trip to Tuscany and Rome. I can't wait to see what has changed- and stayed the same, since our visit in 2001.

I look forward to the carabaccia [onion soup] at Boccon di Vino outside Montalcino. And talking with Tulio at Enoteca Osticcio-I'm taking the Wine Spectator magazine on Brunello to get his autograph. Will the Friday market in Montalcino be as varied and as much fun?

I hope that the Davanzatti Museum will be open this time when we get to Florence.

And what new adventures await? April 8th can't come soon enough!

Welcome, Irene. I'm sending you a friend request - we
Tuscany lovers must stick together! Where will you be
staying in Tuscany? I'm going back May 7th for my 9th
& 10th times in a row - doing 2 back-to-back. Exactly
where is Boccon di Vino? And don't forget the Saturday
market in Buonconvento - lots of fun and delicious
herbed chicken cooked on a spit that's ideal to take
home for dinner. Rome probably hasn't changed much,
it's just too crowded for me! Sorry we won't get to meet
this year. P.S. the Rosso is better than the Brunello!

I really enjoyed the added photos, Irene. Priego is a wonderful little town and your shots brought back happy memories of our trip.

I love Tuscany too - stayed in Montalcino with Untours and found it unforgettable. Haven't seen it from a hot air balloon - must be quite a feeling looking down at that landscape from up high - and landing in a field of sunflowers sounds perfect!! We at least walked through the sunflowers! Enjoyed that and every other unplanned moment there....

Thanks, Doris. I've enjoyed the walk down memory lane, too.

Did you stay in Montcino itself or in one of the farms outside? This visit we are staying in town, having previously stayed on the Barbi property and Le Chiuse. I look forward to visiting with Tullio at the enoteca now that I've tasted enough wine to have something intelligent to say. My first journal entry about tasting brunello in 1999 recorded that I could tell the difference in smell but not in taste of the 4 wines we tried in the tasting.
