We're headed to Castle Sommersdorf in Bavaria. I lived in this area before and I'm looking forward to going back. Have wanted to do this for so long and now with all the kids finally out of the house, and settling down (except that the mother-in-law's since moved in) it's a possibility. Heck. It's a reality! Getting anxious.
You will just love Castle Sommersdorf. It is like a fairy tale! The Baron who insists on being called Manfred, even though he is a Baron and a MD, and Lila are the nicest people. Manfred has a great but dry sense of humor. Moritz the dog is really friendly. Frau Schmidt is very sweet and makes the best apple strudel! The castle location is very convenient although there are so many roads to take in Germany that you can get lost. Luckily the baron had one GPS which he lent to us. If you have a GPS, get a European chip and take it with you.
Don't miss: Dinkelsbuhl; Rothenburg (stay for the Nightwatchman Tour it's worth it); Nurnberg; Schwabish Hall (covered bridges and very picturesque); Bamberg; nearby Wolframs-Escenbach (good half-timbered houses). Wurzburg is very worth the drive juct to see the Residenz - a tour is a must! We did an overnight that included going to the top of the Zugspitz and then on to Fussen to tour Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein.
Take the train if you are going to Munich.
Gosh, I wish I was going back but we just came back from Paris this year.
Have a great trip! I know you will!!!!!
That's us too. The 4 kids are on their own after many years of college tuitions. I tease and say that they spent our inheritance, now we are spending theirs!
I know your travel partner will love this trip. The people are so nice. Do be sure to stop at the grocery store in Burgoberbach. There is a bakery as you walk in. The lady is so nice. Ask her to put butter on your pretzel. We had it first from her. Yummmmmmm!
Be sure to eat at Gasthof Krone across from the church on Main Street of Burgoberbach. The people are friendly, locals hang out and play cards there. The food is good.
Down the road to Neuses is another nice gasthof. I believe it is called Landgasthof Braunes. It's the Baron's favorite. We ended up at their Oktoberfest on our last night. It was great!
Have a really great trip!!!
Yay! dog-lover's unite. Thanks for posting this. There is an early discussion about dogs.....I will go tag my photo of my dog and Marlene's....we were going to have a "who has the cutest dog?"contest, but it never got off the ground.

I just added a new destination for Bavaria. Come join the group. If you have any questions, you can ask there and we can share answers with others.
To join click on the "Destinations" tab at the top of the page; then click on "Bavaria"; then click on 'Join the Group".
Will have to start planning soon for our next trip. My feet are getting restless to walk on new soil. Tuscany, the Netherlands? Let’s take an afternoon to discuss the options! You bring some ideas, I’ll bring the wine!
