Hi Lee,
My daughter and I will also be in Holland (Leiden) in July (late). You've probably checked it already, but there was some good discussion in the Cafe re: a woman traveling with her two granddaughters. I'm just getting started on planning our itinerary!

Hello Lee,
I hope you'll love Holland as much as we did. We went to many of the Untours recommended restaurants in Leiden and they were excellent. Another one that wasn't on the list but which is very good is La Place -- the top story of the V&D Department Store in Leiden. It's something like a cafeteria in that you order what you want from different stations and then they make it for you. Some interesting choices that you may not see everywhere. Also there's a great view of the Leiden rooftops from there.

I had two of my granddaughters with me, ages 12 and 14, and we enjoyed going to Alkmaar on Friday morning for their weekly cheese market. It's quite colorful and there are many booths selling herring, souvenirs, and cheese (with samples!). There are also many cafes for enjoying coffee or lunch.

One other note -- If you want to tour the Peace Palace in den Haag, you need to make a reservation a week ahead of time. I tried the day before and was disappointed.

Good luck!
Thanks so much for the information. We have loved all the Untours we have taken. I can't wait to go to Holland. I really like visiting the small towns. What was your favorite?
Thanks again,
Lee
Lee,
We spent the entire first few days exploring Leiden which has much to offer. The Boerhaave Museum is extremely interesting with medical equipment, drug store heads, etc. We also enjoyed finding out about the almshouses which you will hear about on your orientation probably.

I think my favorite art museum was the Maritshaus (sp!) in The Hague. It contains many of Vermeer's paintings including the "Girl with the Pearl Earring."

In a nod to our son who wanted us to visit some WWII sites, we went to Arnhem on a local train, went to the cemetary, the museum, etc.

Our triplog is almost three years old, but if you get a chance to read it and then have questions, please let us know.

Have a great time. We loved Holland.

Plus, they'll be happy there if they win their semi-final match tomorrow for World Cup. Go Netherlands!

It is hard to say which small town we enjoyed the most. Leiden was wonderful. Gouda has one of the most beautiful town halls and the square is large. They also have a good museum and a church to explore. The visiter center details cheese making.

Delft was very interesting. It, too, has a great square. We were unable to visit the porcelain factory. We arrived too late in the day.

Using the trains to get around Holland is quite easy, but we took the bus from Leiden to Gouda which was an experience in itself because we saw so much of the countryside and small villages. It is about an hour bus trip.
