We will be in Rome at the end of June. The Vatican museums are free the last Sunday of the month. Should we risk going that Sunday? Has anyone any advice about how early to arrive to get in?

Buy a Rick Steve's Guide book, get his recommendation for a group guide and visit the Vatican that way. The guide does not wait in a general line to purchase entry tickets, but has a special line that saves much time. We met our guide at 10Am in front of St. Peter's and he walked and talked us thru everything until 5PM. A magnificent tour! I cannot fathom going on a SUN when Masses are conducted and the crowds. Your are in ROME maybe once in your life; don't worry about free admission. Enjoy one of the most magnificent collections of art in the world with somebody explaining.

Thanks, Don. We have heeded this advice and bought tickets (vouchers) to enter at 2 pm on Saturday. I've heard that afternoons are not too busy, but I'd hate to have to stand in line to exchange the vouchers for tickets. We may upgrade to a guided tour, as you suggest.  Thanks!

Hello Enid, I don't know how one does a self -guided tour of some place as immense and varied as the Vatican. When we had the guide, he talked into a mic and each one of us had a radio receiver with an earpiece and could hear perfectly. He knew his stuff which is a plus when there is art covering almost every square inch of walls and ceilings. Personally, I think you are short changing yourself with a 2PM start time.

Thanks for your advice, Don. I don't think I can stand on my feet for more than four hours! We'll have to be selective, which is what one does when one visits a city like Rome.

Understand, Consider the Borghese Gallery. Self guided, you reserve a time slot. Takes no more than 2 hours and you will see some of the most magnificent sculpture ever, and beautiful paintings. You cannot believe the sculpture is stone; you just want to reach out and touch it.

Thanks, Don. We have our tickets for the Borghese Gallery! We've also got our Colosseo tkts and will spend an evening seeing ballet at the Terme di Caracalla. Have you been to Ostia Antica? I'd like to spend half a day there.

Never to Ostia. We had about 2 1/2 days in Rome, so it was a whirl. Did Vatican, Borghese, Roman Forum and general walk around.
